Description:

This is a challenging and fun out-and-back course with options for distance and style.  Choose a 5 mile snowshoe race or a 10 mile freestyle (skate or classic) ski race.  Non-competitive timed 5 mile freestyle ski also available. Awards for winners, a free bowl of chili, and refreshments will be available after the race at 12:30 at Divot's Restaurant at the Black Canyon Golf Course (1350 Birch Street in Montrose).  Lots of swag and lots of fun. All this to benefit Pediatric Congenital Heart Association, a non-profit group providing support and friendship for families with children born with congenital heart defects (1:100 births, it is more common than most people know!).  No park admission fees.  Groomed course on the South Rim Road.

Course description:

The course is groomed over the South Rim Road and maintained by the National Park Service.  The course is an out-and-back with rolling hills and views of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  The race is self supported with refreshments provided at the start and finish, but not along the course.  The course is exposed so sunny or windy conditions can dramatically change snow temperature on race day or even change during the duration of the race.

Directions to start:

Race begins and ends at the South Rim Visitor Center.  All events start at 10:00 a.m.  The Visitor Center opens at 9:00 a.m. and provides heated space for check-in and registration.  Registration and packet pick-up is from 9:00 to 9:45 race day morning at the Visitor Center.  No entrance fee to the park.  To get to the Visitor's Center, travel 10 miles east on Hwy 50 out of Montrose.  Turn left on Hwy 347 (marked with brown National Park sign) and continue on winding paved road to dead-end at Visitor Center.

Parking:

Free parking available at the Visitor Center; overflow parking follow ranger instructions/signs to park along Rim Road.  Do not block fire lanes.  PARKING IS LIMITED SO PLEASE PLAN TO CARPOOL.

Additional info

Hot and cold refreshments provided at the race finish.  After-party begins at 12:30.  Awards presentation and swag givaways to follow.

Entry Fee:

Online pre-registration is $20 until noon on February 6, 2020.   Race day registration is $25.

No Park Entrance Fee:

No entrance fee to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Packet pickup:

Race day check-in and registration at the Visitor Center from 9:00-9:45 a.m.
