Overview

The single biggest obstacle in advancing research for the early detection of lung cancer is financial support. Private gifts make it possible to accelerate the rate at which researchers can pursue their work. Support of this nature allows scientists to test new theories that otherwise cannot be explored. This initial research often leads to them receiving larger grants that allow them to continue their efforts.

Your gift could mean the difference between life and breath.

There are several ways you can donate to The Gift of Life and Breath race to help fund research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

2012 Fetal Hope Foundation

Click for details

Overview

We at Fetal Hope have made a point to know the sad and glaring facts behind fetal syndromes. We do this so that at some point, 200 parents do not continue to lose their unborn babies to loss, miscarriage and fetal demise. Each of these words is taboo in today’s society, when in fact, each of those babies at one point, had a life and was a plan to become a bigger part of someone else’s life. Chances are that you or someone you know has experienced a loss and it’s time to start talking about it. The more we open up to ourselves, our friends, our communities, our medical fields, and the general public at large, the higher the chances are that people with the powers that be will start listening. When they start listening, doctors will become more knowledgeable about fetal syndromes and how to treat them, women will receive increased fetal/maternal monitoring, they will receive proper diagnoses and treatment, and in the end, parents will welcome their unborn, as babies lives will be saved. YOU can help make this difference by sharing your own story or encouraging those you know who have experienced loss to do so. Together we can make a difference. Together we can save lives.

Please consider sending a video clip of your own personal loss so that others will be encouraged, or consider making a recurring donation to help us reach families in need of support during a fetal syndrome diagnosis. Let’s Start Talking About It. Let’s Start Doing.

3rd Annual Jodi's Race for Awareness

Click for details

Overview

Jodi's Race for Awareness was the inspiration of Jodi Brammeier, a Colorado native, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. She believed she would have caught the cancer earlier had she only been more aware of the signs and symptoms. It became her goal to raise awareness through this race so that other women might find the cancer earlier, and stand a chance to win against this deadly disease.

The first race was held in June, 2010 with a record number of participants for a first time race. Unfortunately Jodi lost her battle August 3rd, less than two months after the inaugural race. However, her memory will forever live on in the race. Please join us June 2nd, 2012 for an inspiring experience! For more information, visit our Website.

Cancer Support Community Colorado

Click for details

Overview

Our mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. This mission supports and complements the medical treatment of cancer.

Three of the most significant stressors negatively impacting the immune systems of people with cancer are unwanted aloneness, uncertainty and confusion, and loss of hope. Our programs help people learn coping skills to regain a sense of control, reduce isolation, and restore hope.

We are the Colorado affiliate of Cancer Support Community, an international nonprofit organization created from the merger of The Wellness Community and Gilda's Club Worldwide. For over 45 years, these organizations have been leaders in providing services to people with cancer, survivors, caregivers, family and friends.

More than 18,000 people in Colorado are diagnosed with cancer every year. With Cancer Support Community Colorado's help, people affected by cancer learn to actively cope with cancer, take responsibility and control of their care, and make desired lifestyle changes to improve their emotional and physical well-being.

Our services include support, education, healthy lifestyle programs, social activities, and information and referral. They are available for people across the cancer continuum and are currently offered at sites in the Denver metro area comfortable and convenient for people with cancer, survivors, caregivers, family and friends.

All services and programs of Cancer Support Community Colorado are offered free of charge to the participants, a policy especially important since financial burdens often add to the stress of cancer.

Here's what participants say about how they've benefited from Cancer Support Community Colorado programs:

"Allowed me to recognize, acknowledge and release situations, thoughts and feelings. Very empowering."

"Brought peace into my life. Helped with my anger."

"Learning about other people's journeys. I am not really exposed to others with cancer so this has been good for me."

"It has helped me learn to relax more and be more creative. It was great to have more connection with others who are also having to make the journey through cancer recovery."

"I received comforting support from the group and have learned I am not a statistic or a number."

"Excellent - please have more!"

Your support helps us reach even more people in the Denver metro area who are impacted by cancer. Together we can ensure that no one faces cancer alone!

Casting for Recovery

Click for details

Overview

Casting for Recovery is a national non-profit support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer.

We provide an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by the disease to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn fly-fishing, "a sport for life." Just as importantly, we offer an opportunity to meet new friends and have fun.

Our weekend retreats incorporate counseling, educational services and the sport of fly-fishing to promote mental and physical healing.

Founded in 1996, Casting for Recovery has been offering free retreats across the country. We rely on local volunteers and organizations to support our community based retreats.

Why fly fishing and breast cancer?

To Fish is to Hope (c)

The retreats provide an avenue for social support and group interactions, reducing the feeling of isolation many survivors might have.

The dynamics of fly fishing provide a healing connection to the natural world, relieving everyday stressors and promoting a sense of calm.

Fly fishing techniques provide a gentle exercise for joint and soft tissue mobility.

The retreats offer a forum for women with similar experiences to meet, learn a new skill and gain a respite from their everyday concerns.

Overview

Colorado Cancer Research Program (CCRP) brings revolutionary cancer treatment, prevention, and symptom control options to patients in Colorado. CCRP provides patients the opportunity to have these advanced opportunities in their local community. These trials give the patient direct impact, not only in the potential outcome of their individual situation but also the broader population as a whole. During the history of CCRP, many of the cancer treatment and prevention trials that CCRP participated have become the standard of care for cancer treatment as well as known measures to prevent cancer. Today CCRP is a partnership between 120 community oncologists and 17 hospitals throughout Colorado. CCRP is able to bring directly to our medical partners and their patients the most cutting edge cancer treatment and cancer control options. This unique partnership allows patients to receive these advanced options by their own doctor, in their own community. In its 25 year history, CCRP has brought 349 research trials to over 4,200 patients in Colorado. Additionally, all of CCRP’s financial resources remain in Colorado, to support Coloradoans. Until there is a cure, CCRP is committed to continue to bring these advanced treatment options not only to those directly impacted by cancer today, but to make a difference in future generations.

Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance

Overview

Ovarian cancer is the most deadly of gynecological cancers and early detection is the key to long-time survival. Perhaps you know someone who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. If so, you know that she celebrates each day as a gift – and it’s not a gift she takes for granted. She hopes that in her lifetime, there will be a better diagnostic test, a better treatment, and maybe even a cure. In the meantime, she can turn to the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance (COCA) to provide survivor support, education and advocacy. Survivor Support: COCA offers monthly support groups to provide ovarian cancer survivors a place to share thoughts and feelings, discuss medical research, and learn about ovarian cancer and how to access financial resources and appropriate health care. Advocacy: COCA advocates for excellence in health care for, and increased research on, ovarian cancer. Education: COCA raises awareness about symptoms and risks via survivors putting a face on this illness by sharing their stories with medical students in addition to providing speakers to clubs, organizations and groups interested in learning about ovarian cancer. COCA needs your help! We rely on your contributions to fund the critical education, advocacy and support that we offer Colorado women.

Family HomeStead

Overview

Our Core Values

  • We believe that homeless families with children do not belong in shelters.

  • We provide emergency and transitional housing to homeless families with children.

  • We provide supportive case management based on each family’s unique situation.

  • We focus on realistic outcomes.

  • We believe each family must contribute to their own success.

  • Family HomeStead (originally Denver Emergency Housing Coalition) began in 1978 as a coalition of service providers responding to the destruction of short-term low-cost housing for homeless families resulting from extensive urban renewal. We changed our name to Family HomeStead in 1993. Beginning with 10 apartments leased from the Denver Housing Authority, we were the first organization in Metro Denver to offer independent housing to homeless families. Our original Emergency Housing Program had a maximum stay of 45 days. Realizing that such a short time period was not sufficient for many families to get back on their feet, we began our longer-term Transitional Housing Program in 1983. Family homelessness is increasing today and our services have expanded to meet the need. We currently place families in 31 emergency and 58 transitional units located in Denver and Jefferson County. We provide individualized case management for each family.

Jordan's Angel Foundation Is dedicated to caring for families with childhood cancer by providing financial and in-kind assistance. In addition, Jordan's Angel Foundation desires to promote childhood cancer awareness.

    Purpose of Foundation:
Jordan's Angel Foundation was established in memory of eight-year-old Jordan Richey and her seven -year battle against leukemia. Throughout this experience it was apparent that many families with children in pediatric oncology had unmet emotional and financial needs. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for families of children with cancer and their special needs. In order to meet the needs of these children and their families we will assist with the funding for counseling, recreational opportunities, family financial needs, assistance for parents to be with their children during medical treatment, airfare for grandparents to be with family, grocery and gas cards, fun-filled parties to offer hospitalized children comfort, companionship, and opportunities for the family to create lasting memories with the child.

    Overview

Just-In-Time Neuroblastoma Foundation, Inc. was inspired by a boy named Justin. Justin was only three and a half years old when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. From his initial diagnosis, Justin's family struggled to find information not only on the disease itself, but also on finding information on where to turn to and how to coordinate much needed blood bank donations, fundraising ideas to offset the financial burdens of medical treatment and unpaid time off work and information on treatment options and national treatment facilities specializing in Neuroblastoma such as Sloan's Kettering.

Therefore, after Justin had been cancer free for 15 months, Justin's family and friends organized the Just-In-Time Neuroblastoma Foundation, Inc., hoping it might come "just in time" to help out another family undergoing the same or similar illness.

    Overview

    A World Problem:

    1. Every second of every day one child dies of starvation or a disease brought on by malnourishment.

    2. Childhood obesity in the United States is at an all time high, and youth fitness is declining at an alarming rate.

    3. Children and adults with Intellectual and physical disabilities have very few outlets that will allow them to participate in sports.

    How this simple concept succeeds:
Our for profit philosophy allows us the freedom to use a free market approach to raising funds by runners registering for our running events through SupportOurSociety.org, and with organizations and individuals that fundraise while learning to run marathons, 10k's and half marathons. We allow each organization to retain a percentage of what is raised for their own prudent reserve and the remaining balance is used to purchase food and to offer grants to our non-profit partnership programs.

Thank you for your encouragement and support.
    Warm Regards,

    Overview

The Raymond Wentz Foundation was established in late 2002 by Denver oncologist Dr. David Schrier in memory of his patient, Raymond Wentz. Raymond battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 18. Although he lost his battle he inspired all the people who helped care for him with his constant bravery and grace. His memory lives on through The Raymond Wentz Foundation which is dedicated to generating hope to Colorado cancer patients by lessoning their daily financial struggles. Often a cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatment force already low-income uninsured or underinsured patients to miss work, creating an inability for them to keep up with their bills. Financial burdens affect the patients’ ability to heal and recover from cancer treatment. Funding this cause allows the foundation to bring simple joys to cancer patients in the greatest need.

    Overview

    Who We Are

Rocky Mountain Cancer Assistance (RMCA), is a Colorado-based nonprofit organization providing financial assistance for the basic living needs of cancer patients receiving treatment in Colorado. Assistance from RMCA is for rent or mortgage, food, utilities, transportation, and health insurance premiums or COBRA payments, and other non-medical expenses. RMCA's goal is to continue to provide assistance to every eligible applicant that demonstrates a dire financial situation. Support from RMCA helps cancer patients avoid delaying or ending treatment due to financial stress.

    Why Were We Founded

RMCA, formerly known as Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Foundation, was started in 1999 by a group of doctors, patients, friends, and associates of the Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers. These volunteers recognized that with treatment many patients' household budget was stretched to the limits due to treatment and treatment-related costs. A patient's normal budget is overturned at the same time their income may be reduced because they are unable to work due to the illness. Their stress level greatly increases at the very time they need to be focusing on their health. Our objective is to reduce this stress whenever possible and help ensure that patients can continue their treatment.

    Our Vision

To be the preeminent Colorado charitable entity assisting cancer patients in meeting their needed living expenses.

Roundup Ranch enriches the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses by providing free, year-round camping experiences with appropriate medical care that are fun, safe and empowering. The camp is a provisional member of the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, founded in 1988 by Paul Newman and is now the largest family of camps worldwide for children with serious illnesses.
After conducting a needs assessment in 2006, it was determined more than 35,000 children in the Rocky Mountain Region suffer from a serious illness. More than 85 percent do not have the opportunity to attend camp because of their illness. With plans to open in the summer of 2011, Roundup River Ranch will help close the gap and provide life-changing opportunities to thousands of children.
As part of this initiative, we have embarked on a $20 million capital campaign appropriately named “Campaign for Laughter.” The campaign will help us fulfill a dream of building a Hole in the Wall Camp to enable these children to experience new and traditional camp activities, explore the Colorado Rocky Mountain wilderness and embrace the simple joys of being a kid.
Our camp will be free to campers and their families. Parents will look to the camp as a respectful, safe, medically supported place for their children to have fun away from hospitals. The camp will be a positive, loving place where campers, parents, siblings, volunteers and staff will benefit from personal enrichment and life-changing experiences.

    Overview

This Foundation is built on the dreams and memory of Rachael Newton. Rachael was only 14 years old when she passed away. Rachael loved Elvis; she had many Christmas ornaments, blankets, pillow, everything she could find with Elvis on it, and every CD. She also loved Audrey Hepburn; Breakfast at Tiffany’s was one of her favorites. Rachael was a self taught artist; she wanted to be a fashion designer and was already looking at schools. So when she received a Make-A-Wish trip she picked Paris where she had a seat at the end of the cat walk for a fashion show at Lafayette. Rachael had a big heart she loved everyone. She also had a great sense of humor, she lost her hair from the chemo and radiation when she was 13 and most girls would be devastated but she would pick on those of us that had to take the time to do our hair or had to buy shampoo.
The last few years of Rachael’s life were hard; she had a craniotomy (brain surgery), laminectomy (surgery to remove tumors from spinal cord), full head and spine radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. She also had daily migraines. But still she didn’t want kids to go through what she was going through, so she started making earrings and Christmas ornaments to sell and gave the money to her doctors for their research. She never said this was for her but for other children.
After Rachael passed away, I packed away the earrings and ornaments because it was just too painful for me to deal with. But then I had friends that convinced me that we needed to continue this for Rachael, this was what she wanted and if she was still here she would be doing it. At that point we started the nonprofit paperwork; it became obvious this was what we were supposed to be doing. When we contacted Rachael’s doctors they were setting up the Brain Tumor Institute at the same time and partnered with us, our nonprofit paperwork was quickly approved, the foundation has been growing steadily ever since, and we will continue to raise the awareness of pediatric brain tumors and fund research into treatments and hopefully one day a cure for this devastating disease.

    Overview

Imagine life as you know it changed completely and forever in just one moment…

Each year an estimated 1.4 million people will experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is a growing public health concern as an estimated 5.3 million Americans have suffered from an acquired brain injury that requires a long-term or lifelong need for help to perform daily activities.

It is crucial that a survivor receive post acute rehabilitation of “sufficient scope, duration, and intensity to restore maximum function and accommodate residual disability” (Brain Injury Association of America, 2008).

The need for continuous and long-term care is underscored by the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Association of America which states the following (excerpt) in its position statement:

“Barriers to accessing the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) continuum of care result in enormous medical, social and economic consequences for the individual who is injured, his or her family members, and the nation as a whole. Delayed treatment results in higher levels of disability, an increased reliance on pharmacological interventions, greater durable medical equipment needs, and higher long-term care costs.”

“There are more annual incidences of brain injury than Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injuries, HIV/AIDS, and Breast Cancer put together” – James Brady

Starlight’s primary goal is to lessen the emotional and psychological impact that hospitalization and ongoing treatment have on seriously and chronically ill children.
Our programs enable these children and their families to spend time together away from the hospital, meet others facing similar challenges, build a local support network, feel less isolated and, most importantly, return home with a renewed sense of hope.

Our programs, serving an estimated 10,000 unduplicated children a year, are as follows: Fun Packs Backpacks, filled with hospital-friendly activities, games and necessities given at the time of hospital admission; Great Escapes, social outings and activities free -of -charge to the ill child and their family; Fun Centers, mobile entertainment units complete with a Nintendo Wii, a DVD player, and a library of games and movies; Starlight Sites, fully-equipped playrooms and playgrounds at local pediatric facilities for ill children and their siblings; and Starbright World, a secured, online social network designed just for Starlight kids.

    MISSION STATEMENT

We are dedicated to providing people who have cancer with the best possible care, while working diligently in the laboratory, in the clinic and in the community to find new treatments, therapies and someday a cure for all cancer.

    SERVICES PROVIDED

A diagnosis of cancer is life altering and for many people causes financial hardships never before encountered. In order to assist patients through their treatments, the University of Colorado Cancer Center created an Oncology Patient Assistance Fund that provides emergency assistance for such things as housing, prescriptions drugs, food, utilities and gas – the essentials of day to day living that can be impacted by increased medical expenses. For patients and families this assistance greatly reduces the stress they encounter on their cancer journey.

    Overview

Wapiyapi is a Denver based nonprofit organization offering a community of hope and support to families facing childhood cancer. Our free programs provide a respite for children with cancer and their families.

As of 2011, our summer camps, young adult & family retreats have served over 1,400 children by offering a safe and nurturing environment to allow these patients and their families the natural freedoms of childhood.

Wapiyapi organizes many support programs throughout the year including services for Spanish-speaking and bereaved families. We hope that these opportunities will empower families to understand that they do not face their challenges alone.

    Overview

    Who We Are

Young Empowered Survivors (YES!) helps connect young women dealing with a cancer diagnosis. The group focuses on support, empowerment, sharing perspectives and resources so that our members don't feel alone as they go through their cancer diagnosis and treatment. YES! provides a safe, supportive environment to do so.

The members of YES! have generally been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 45, but we don't put constraints on the word 'young.’ If you feel that you can benefit from our group, we welcome you.

    What We Do

Young Empowered Survivors is primarily an online resource. We have an active message board for members to share questions, ideas and helpful resources. We also meet once a quarter in a casual setting to allow members to spend time with others who are going through or have gone through similar experiences. We encourage new members to get together with other members of the group.
