Welcome to the 2nd Annual

Race for Open Space!

Come out and support your local open space nonprofits, right here in Denver

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership and Bluff Lake Nature Center are teaming up to put on the Race for Open Space. The beautiful course will wind along Sand Creek and finish with a view of Bluff Lake! 

By participating in the festivities, you are helping fund natural areas in Denver, important environmental education programs for urban youth, and land restoration projects. This year we are happy to incorporate a 10K and Half Marathon along with the 5K we hosted last year.  Join us as a casual runner/walker, as an avid racer, or as a group to support our beautiful Denver trails.

The Race for Open Space is a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon benefiting both Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership and Bluff Lake Nature Center, two of Denver's premier open space organizations.

Course description:

All three courses are majority crusher fine with intermixed short paved sections.
  • 5K: The 5K course starts at Bluff Lake and follows the trail east looping around Sand Creek Park. Take advantage of the view of the mountains on the way, as the course heads back west. The last half mile will be all downhill, while enjoying the scencic view around Bluff Lake when you cross the finish line. To see elevation details, click here. 

  • 10K: The 10K course starts at Bluff Lake, follows the trail east through Sand Creek Park and under I-225. The course will include a quick turnaround at Chambers Road before it hits Star K Ranch.  Take advantage of the view of the mountains on the way, as the course heads back west.  The last half mile will be all downhill, while enjoying the scencic view around Bluff Lake when you cross the finish line.  To see elevation details, click here. 

  • Half Marathon: The Half Marathon course starts at Bluff Lake, follows the trail east through Sand Creek Park and under I-225. It will include a quick turnaround before the Sand Creek Greenway Trail ends, about .25mi before Colfax. The course will veer around Star K Ranch on an unmarked trail, and continue back west, past Sand Creek Park and Bluff Lake. Miles 11 and 12 will cross under Havana, run past the Urban Farm and turn back at the Smith Road Trail Head. The last half mile will be all downhill, while enjoying the scenic view around Bluff Lake when you cross the finish line. To see evelation details, click here.

Directions to start:

The starting line is just east of Bluff Lake Nature Center's large entrance sign, along Sand Creek Greenway's path.

Parking:

Parking is along Bluff Lake Nature Center's fenceline along Havana Way, west of and near the entrance to Bluff Lake Nature Center, just to the east of Havana. Please do not park on the trail near the fence, but on the ample grassy area immediately next to the fence. No part of your vehicle should be overhanging the trail. Bluff Lake Nature Center's entrance is on Havana Way, which is an extension of Martin Luther King/Iola to the east of Havana.

Awards info:

Awards for overall winners in each event in addition to age group awards in ten year increments.

Therefore, awards will also be presented for the following categories: Best Costume (Adult), Best Costume (Child), and Best Team Costume.

Course Time Limits

  • Half Marathon - 4 Hours
  • 10K - 2 Hours
  • 5K - 1.5 Hours

Restrictions

  • Due to narrow and uneven areas on some portions of the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Trail, no strollers are permitted
  • In order to respect Bluff Lake policy, no pets are allowed at this event.
  • Costumes cannot have more than one person in them.  Seriously, no “centipedes”—it’s dangerous!
  • Please, no running or walking more than 2 abreast.

Are you experienced Half Marathon runner? 

Volunteer to become a pacer for your race and race time to receive $10 off your registration!

  • 1:30 (6:52 per mile)
  • 1:35 (7:15 per mile)
  • 1:40 (7:38 per mile)
  • 1:45 (8:01 per mile)
  • 1:50 (8:24 per mile)
  • 2:00 (9:10 per mile)
  • 2:15 (10:18 per mile)
  • 2:30 (11:27 per mile)

  • Saturday, 4/12 @ Centeral Park Recreation Center9651 E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., 80238 between 11:30AM - 4:30PM
  • Packets will also be available for pickup on race day (Sunday, 4/13) at the registration table between 7:00AM - 8:30AM.
