Description:
Join us for one of the very few events that have run across Cherry Creek Dam Road. The 2012 Derek's Dash!
Ethan Widoff, who just finished 9th grade at Cherry Creek High School, three years ago decided to hold a 5k fundraiser in the hopes of finding some help for his cousin who suffers from very severe epilepsy. He felt helpless watching him suffer from days where he has thousands of seizures a day, and his aunt and uncle taking turns sleeping with him because of the fear of him having a fatal seizure while he sleeps. His cousin is a year and a half older than Ethan, but Derek needs assistance to do even the most basic of things like walking or eating. Ethan decided to organize some of his friends to be co-chairs, and with his family’s help, they organized the first ever Derek's Dash. That first year was such a huge success that they decided to continue holding this event until they graduate from high school or until a cure is found for Dravet Syndrome. So far they have raised over $100,00 that has gone to researching a cure for Dravet syndrome. Joining Ethan and his younger sister Molly on the Derek's Dash planning committee this year are Ashtyn Reaugh, Connor Sendel, Dylan Bernstein, Emma Maloney, Abigail Hingst, Darby Soloman, Walker Crowley and A.J. Yang. We are working to fight childhood epilepsy one step and one syndrome at a time!

Why:
We host this race each year in honor of Derek Rudawsky. Derek attends Cherry Creek High School, but battles Dravet Syndrome every day. Derek is 17 years old, and has had epilepsy since he was 6 months old. His parents have tried numerous treatments, but unfortunately his seizures remain largely uncontrolled. Although Derek faces challenges every day, he is inspiring because of his positive attitude. Sadly there are many other children like Derek who face similar battles, but with our event we hope to be able to help.
Who benefits:
The money raised from this race goes to Dravet.org (formerly the International Dravet Syndrome Epilepsy Action League), a volunteer-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide resources and support for affected individuals and families (like my cousin’s) and to find a cure for Dravet Syndrome. Over the last three years we have raised over $100,000 for research studies aimed at finding a cure for this devastating form of childhood epilepsy. Everyone was surprised that a group of kids could organize such a successful event. While we are proud of our accomplishments, we vow to keep working until a cure is found.
The Planners:
Thanks to the tireless efforts of the event's co-chairs -- all of them 14- and 15-year-old students -- local support for the event is widespread. Derek's Dash has something for everyone.
Fun and food for all
